Description

These premium-quality rolling pins are hand-made, turned on my lathe, one at a time.  They all have a non-toxic, food-safe oil/wax finish.  With proper care, these pins will last for generations.

I have two style pins:  French and Baton.  (see additional photos, below…)

The French rolling pins have the classic curved taper.  The tapered ends allow for easier manipulation and pivoting while rolling dough.  Also, when pressing down on the tapered ends of the pin, the force is concentrated in the center, which helps wrestle cold pie dough down to a more manageable thickness.

The Batons are sleek, modern, and striking in appearance.  The ends are finished slightly concave,  so they can stand as monoliths on your counter, if you so choose.  Standard batons are typically 16-18″ in length.  I also make 14-16″ Compact Batons.  In addition to fitting more easily in drawers, some may prefer the shorter length.  And finally I make Mini Batons, 10-12″ in length.  These are essentially one-handed batons – I have a Walnut one that I use to roll out pizza dough.

The two French pins I have at the moment are Maple and Cherry.  The Cherry is slightly longer and slightly thinner.  The color and grain of the Cherry is gorgeous.  The Maple is also beautiful, but more understated.

The two Batons I have in stock are Walnut and Ash.  The color and grain of each is lovely, albeit different.  The Walnut is standard size, and the Ash – at 14″ – is a Compact.  They would make an awesome light/dark set.  (Note:  the Ash very dense, so even though it’s the shortest, it’s the heaviest one here.  It has surprising heft when you pick it up.)

About the woods:

MAPLE (Acer saccharum) is native to northeastern North America.  It has grain that is generally straight, but may be wavy, with a fine, even texture. Maple is hard and strong and is a favorite for woodenware that comes in contact with food. Instances of birdseye, curly, or quilted grain are highly prized, as are maple burls.

BLACK WALNUT (Juglans nigra), also known as American Walnut, is one of North America’s finest and most valuable lumber species.  It is highly prized for its dark-colored heartwood and beautiful grain.  It is heavy and strong, yet works easily with hand and machine tools.  Walnut has historically been used for gunstocks, furniture, flooring, coffins, and a variety of other wood products.

CHERRY (Prunus serotina) is native to eastern North America.  It has been one of our most prized furniture timbers for centuries.  It is easily workable with both hand and power tools and it exhibits some of the most beautiful colors and grain patterns of any domestic species.  Black Cherry develops a rich reddish-brown patina as it ages.  As a woodturner, cherry is one of my favorite species.  It never disappoints!

AMERICAN WHITE ASH (Fraxinus americana) is native to eastern North America.  It has a medium to coarse grain pattern, similar to oak.  The grain is almost always straight and regular, though sometimes moderately curly or figured wood can be found.
